AIRPORT OR CITY CENTRE

Where to exchange money: Barcelona airport or city centre?

When you land, convenience matters. Once you have time to choose, an office on your route through Barcelona may make more sense. Start with when you need euros and which desk you can actually reach.

01

At Terminal 1: start with the public desk

Aena lists a 24-hour public Global Exchange office in T1. It also lists desks in baggage reclaim and boarding areas with different hours. Those locations are not interchangeable: check that you can reach the desk from your arrival or departure area. Aena also lists CaixaBank under airport currency exchange; confirm the particular service you need.

02

At Terminal 2: arrivals and departures differ

Aena lists a 24-hour Global Exchange office in T2B departures and a T2B arrivals office open from 09:00 to 17:00. A departures desk is not automatically a practical option for someone who has just landed. Check the terminal, access and current hours rather than relying on “open 24 hours” for the airport as a whole.

03

How urgently do you need the euros?

If you need cash for your first expenses, ask for a quote for that amount at an accessible airport desk. You can decide separately what to do with the rest of your budget. If you already have a suitable payment card and can wait, contact a city office before making a detour. Check your card’s conditions with your bank; withdrawing cash and paying by card can have different costs.

04

City-centre offices and neighbourhood alternatives

In the centre, the directory includes offices on La Rambla, by the Cathedral and on Carrer de la Princesa in the Born. You can also look along Diagonal, around Hostafrancs or near Virrei Amat if those areas fit your plans. Airports and tourist streets can be convenient; neither the address nor a busy counter proves that a quote is better or worse.

05

Compare the trip as well as the quote

Ask airport and city offices about the same currency and amount. Compare the final payout, then consider the cost and time of reaching each office. A small difference may not justify crossing the city, while a larger transaction may be worth arranging ahead. Check how long a quoted price remains available.

06

Bringing dollars or pounds into Barcelona?

Tell the office whether you have US dollars, another dollar currency or British pounds, and which banknotes you carry. The three Quickgold offices list foreign banknotes to euros; Europound lists both buying and selling currency. That distinction matters if you need foreign cash for an onward journey rather than euros for Barcelona.

Questions before you go

Can I exchange money at Barcelona Airport late at night?

Aena lists a 24-hour public desk in T1 and a 24-hour desk in T2B departures. Check whether the location is accessible for your journey and confirm current opening hours before relying on it.

Is currency exchange always cheaper in Barcelona city centre?

You need comparable quotes to know. Ask for the euros you would receive after all charges for the same amount, and consider the journey to the office. We do not have a live airport-versus-city price comparison.

Do I need to exchange my whole travel budget on arrival?

You can ask about the cash you need immediately and decide on the remainder later. The right amount depends on your plans and other payment options, rather than a fixed amount for every visitor.
